The objective of the visit is to investigate the allegations made by a number of petitioners concerning the ongoing construction of the M30 motorway project in and around Madrid. The Parliament does not question the right of the competent authorities in Madrid to develop a proper transport infrastructure which they consider to be necessary. However, the petitioners have indicated that European legislation regarding the environmental impact of the project, and on noise and atmospheric pollution, and possible public procurement, may not be fully respected. The European Commission, in a separate decision, opened infringement proceedings on April 4th. The members of the fact-finding visit will meet with public authorities, local residents affected by the project and other interested parties during the course of their visit.
